Case Study 2: OpenApply at Anglo-American School of Sofia
The Anglo-American School of Sofia had a desire to streamline their admissions process for many reasons, including:
  • The applications and supporting documents were all paper-based. This was causing a waste of paper and a risk of misplacing parts of the applications, plus a storage issue.
  • The school was dependent on the Admissions Officer to move applications along. This made it very difficult for anyone to deputise for the admissions department during sickness or holiday and ensure that an application didn’t stall.
  • It was complicated to keep records and store and recall data in a usable format.
  • It was difficult for staff to review applications if they were not at school and didn’t have the applicant’s folder in their hands
  • Transferring approved applications to the student information system was time consuming.- Applications were difficult to decipher because many of them were hand-written.

The Anglo-American School of Sofia’s approach was slow but thorough and determined. After much consultation with those involved in the process in our own school and colleagues from other international schools, we chose OpenApply. But the work was not done. Lynne and Angela will share their experience, challenges, and rewards in implementing a system that was completely new to all in the community. They will review what they learned along the way by trying, evaluating and changing direction as they went.

Session 1: Educational Risk Management in the Middle East
International admissions during politically uncertain times is not just about giving up or filling up empty seats with additional local students who merely increase school numbers, it is about offering a convenient and expeditious application process where expat families who work for embassies, NGOs, relief organizations and multinational companies can find a friendly and reassuring ear to listen to their worries, needs and limitations when searching for a suitable international school.

By being creative, open-minded and somewhat of a risk taker, even in a volatile region of the world where refugees have spilled out of their countries and peace seems impossible, use each “expat” inquiry as an opportunity to promote your school’s secure campuses, private settings, small class numbers, unique academic features and a convenient application process to attract international families and their employers.

Session 4: Designing the Landscape of International School Admissions

The growth of international education around the globe over the past twenty years has led to the professionalisation of the international schools admissions function.  Today, the admissions function in a school can be captured by three core areas of activity: telling the story of the school, managing a set of processes, and connecting with people. Rooted in principles of design thinking, this highly interactive workshop will encourage participants to imagine the next future of international school admissions, the standards that will define this future, as well as the professional development that will be required in order to embrace this future with confidence.
